Get to know Katy Chan – practitioner at Natural Solutions Acupuncture

May 18, 2020

Get to know Katy Chan, acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist at Natural Solutions Acupuncture.

Katy Chan is the newest addition to the Natural Solutions Acupuncture team. She is an acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist and started working with us about a month ago, in April 2020. For this blog we’ve asked her some questions so that we can all get to know her a little better.

Why did you decide to study Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Growing up in Hong Kong, I was always fascinated by Chinese Medicine doctors who were able to know a person’s condition by taking tongue and pulse. Yet, I never thought of studying TCM as my whole family are accountants. I always thought that I would become an accountant when I grow up. It wasn’t until seeing my ever-cheerful high school teacher deteriorating rapidly after being diagnosed with cancer, that I realised the importance of health. The frustration of not knowing how to help led me to the path of studying Traditional Chinese Medicine.

What do you like the most about being an acupuncturist?

Acupuncture NeedleI love being acupuncturist because it gives me the tools to help people. I find it very rewarding to see patients bringing back smiles to their lives.

What do you like doing in your spare time?

In my spare time, I love reading, watching Youtube, and practicing Yoga. I recently started practicing Qigong, it makes me calmer and brings back the awareness of my body. Practicing Qigong has immediately become my most important ritual to do every day.

What is your favourite book?

I recently finished reading ‘Educated’ by Tara Westover. It was very mind-blowing as I read Tara’s spiritual breakthrough from her traditional family, from never going to school to studying in university, and finishing PhD. It has a lot of powerful messages and I recommend this book to everyone.

What is your favourite holiday destination?

I always go to Hong Kong for a holiday because my parents are in Hong Kong, and I miss the traditional Hong Kong food very much. And I always look forward to exploring new places in Hong Kong when I go back.

Tell us something about you that not many people know?

I studied in a Buddhist boarding high school for 5 years in the United States. We had a very strict schedule every day. For school days, we had to wake up at 6 am for breakfast, went to school from 8am to 4pm, sat in the study room for 3 hours at night, and we did a lot of chanting throughout the day. It seemed quite a boring and isolated life as we had very limited internet access and we could only call our parents for half an hour each week. However, I still miss all the fun and unique moments and laugh about all the things that we did at school.
