Here in the Southern Hemisphere, we’ve almost reached the shortest day of the year, Winter Solstice. This is an important and powerful time in the tradition of the Chinese philosophy Daoism. At this time, the earth’s Yin movement (towards increasing darkness) transitions into a Yang movement (towards increasing light). The energy will be at a maximum of Yin (which represents the cold, dark, passive energy) and there will be the so-called ‘Birth of the Baby Yang’ (Yang represents light, warmth and active energy).
Within the exact moment of the transition (here in Sydney it is 1:54am 22nd June 2019), there is thought to be a moment of perfect harmony, that opens the possibility of new creation and rebirth. It is an important time to cultivate and support your energy system by not using any Yang energy. Essentially this means hibernating for sometime surrounding the actual moment of the Solstice.
These are some guidelines to consider:
- Sleep or meditate
- Stay indoors
- Eat as less as possible
- No shower
- No external stimulus
- No mental and physical activity
- No sweating
- No talking
