Recovering from COVID-19

January 19, 2022

At this stage of the Covid-19 pandemic, the chances are fairly high that you have been or will get infected with Covid-19 at some stage. For most people the symptoms are now relatively mild and after a week of isolation people can return to normal activities if they don’t have any symptoms anymore. It’s quite common though that some of the symptoms linger after the acute infection.

Persisting symptoms after a COVID-19 infection

Some of the common signs and symptoms that linger over time are:

  • FatigueCovid19 Symptoms
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Cough
  • Joint Pain
  • Chest Pain
  • Concentration Problems
  • Sleep Problems
  • Muscle Pains
  • Headache
  • Loss of Smell and/or Taste
  • Depression or Anxiety

Why do symptoms linger after a COVID-19 infection?

In Chinese Medicine this concept is called a ‘lingering pathogenic factor’. It’s applicable for all ‘bugs’, not only Covid-19. Simply said, it applies when you’ve had a virus or other infection and your body doesn’t clear it completely. This means you haven’t been able to shake that cold or flu, haven’t fully recovered or haven’t felt quite right since getting that ‘bug’.

A lingering pathogenic factor does not necessarily mean that the virus is still present in the body and generally you’re not infectious anymore. It just means that some of the symptoms of the infection still remain.

The lingering pathogen can drain and deplete the body. If left untreated it can turn into other health problems. An affected person may feel generally well on a daily basis but when busy or run down the symptoms can flare up again.

How can Chinese Medicine support your recovery?

Covid19 AcupunctureUsing acupuncture and sometimes Chinese herbal medicine we can effectively support the body to vent the lingering pathogen. At the same time we will work on strengthening the body and supporting the immune system.

By strengthening your body as well as releasing the lingering pathogen, Chinese medicine provides a holistic approach to this common scenario of lingering symptoms after an infection.
