Are your Favourite Therapies still covered after the 2019 Health Insurance Reforms?

March 06, 2019

You might have heard that from the 1st of April 2019 widespread health insurance reforms will come into effect. The government says this will help reduce expenses for insurers, thereby helping them to keep the cost of their policies more manageable.

What is changing?

The government has decided that policies offering the following 16 natural therapies will no longer be rebate compliant – meaning your insurer will be dropping them from your cover: Alexander Technique, Aromatherapy, Bowen Therapy, Buteyko Therapy, Feldenkrais, Herbalism, Homeopathy, Iridology, Kinesiology, Naturopathy, Pilates, Reflexology, Rolfing, Shiatsu, Tai Chi and Yoga.

How will this affect you?

It means that your policy might change. If your policy includes any of the affected natural therapies, they will be cancelled by 1 April 2019 or possibly sooner depending on your insurer.

Are any natural therapies not affected?

Some natural therapies are not affected by the reforms, and you’ll continue to find them on many policies. These include the following: Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine, Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Exercise Physiology and Remedial Massage.

Am I still covered for Acupuncture after April 1st 2019?

Yes, acupuncture is not one of the therapies affected by the reform and you will continue to be able to claim your session with your private health fund.
